Launching yourself into a new career as a travel agent is exciting, but it can also be overwhelming. The travel industry is vast, and the steps to becoming a successful travel agent aren’t always clear. Like any big decision, it is important to explore your options so that you can find the one that best suits you!

What Does It Take to Become a Travel Agent?

In the United States, there is no educational standard to become a travel agent. You do not have to take a test or have a certificate, though some states do require you to register as a seller of travel. Many travel agents gain their knowledge of the travel industry as they go, learning about destinations, cruises, hotels, and more as they work with travel suppliers and begin to specialize in specific areas of travel.

Some agents have a background in the travel industry, but many do not. Agents can participate in educational courses offered by their host agencies, suppliers, and other industry organizations. Agents looking to further develop their business often pursue certifications through recognized institutes in the travel industry.
